Pet Rabbit Care

Small Animals

Rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils and other small animals are fun pets to keep. As long as they are kept healthy, provided with a warm home, given plenty of attention and a good diet they are fairly easy to keep happy.

These basic steps should be followed when keeping a small animal.

  1. Feed a good balanced diet and ensure water is fresh and clean.
  2. Provide a safe and warm home with plenty of fresh bedding.
  3. Treat fleas and mites quickly and effectively, especially during warmer months.
  4. Groom longer haired animals as appropriate.
  5. Practise good hygiene for your pet and its home – clean the cage and replace the bedding at least once a week!
  6. Regular veterinary check-ups.

Guinea Pigs

Guinea pig hutches

A large hutch is an ideal place to keep a guinea pig. Extra compartments and multiple stories will help keep your guinea pig entertained. Make sure you clean out your guinea pigs hutch at least once a week.

Hamster food, gerbil & mouse food

As with rabbits, guinea pigs require plenty of fibre in their diet to ensure digestive health and keep teeth in good condition. Guinea pigs are also unable to produce their own vitamin C and therefore it is vital that you feed a diet with added vitamin C.

Supplement your guinea pigs diet with vegetables and occasionally feed fruit as a treat.

Always provide access to clean fresh water at all times either in a bowl or through a gravity feeding bottle.

Preventing Boredom

Hamster toys, gerbil toys, mouse toys and running wheels can help prevent boredom and encourage exercise.

General Guinea Pig Care

All guinea pigs should be checked daily. A healthy guinea pig should be lively and inquisitive, eating and drinking regularly and have bright eyes and a shiny coat.
