Rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils and other small animals are fun pets to keep. As long as they are kept healthy, provided with a warm home, given plenty of attention and a good diet they are fairly easy to keep happy.
These basic steps should be followed when keeping a small animal.
1. Feed a good balanced diet and ensure water is fresh and clean.
Housing
There are many specially designed hamster, gerbil and mouse homes available; it is advisable to avoid purchasing a cage with wire floors, as this can be uncomfortable for their feet. Ensure that a deep layer of bedding is placed in the cage to allow the hamster, gerbil or mouse to burrow or hide in.
Change your hamster, gerbil, or mouse’s bedding at least once a week.
Feeding
Hamsters, gerbils and mice can be fed a muesli mix diet. Supplement their diet with small amounts of vegetables and fruit occasionally as a treat and provide hay for roughage. Remember hamsters, gerbils and mice store their food so be careful not to overfeed them.
Ensure clean fresh water is available at all times from a gravity feeding bottle.
Preventing Boredom
To help prevent boredom and encourage exercise add a running wheel and other safe toys for them to play with.
General Care
All hamsters, gerbils and mice should be checked daily, healthy animals should be curious and alert, with bright eyes and clean noses.
